First Nation rethinking fishing plans
JUNE 15, 2001
The Indian Brook First Nation is reconsidering its plans to set lobster traps in St. Mary's Bay, leaders aid on Thursday.
If the community decides the risk are too great, there will be no fishing at all, said Chief Reg Maloney, retreating from plans to defy federal government officials and start lobster trapping without approval. The band had wanted to start fishing as early as Thursday whether or not the government approved.
Tribal leaders will meet and discuss the issue this weekend.
