Goshute nuclear review might be extended

TUESDAY, APRIL 30, 2002

The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board is considering extending administrative proceedings over a proposed nuclear waste storage facility on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation in Utah.

The board is hearing arguments by the state and a group of companies which wants to build the facility. In response to additional environmental concerns over earthquakes, the review might be extended for another two weeks.

Eight private utilities want to store up to 44,000 tons of highly radioactive waste on the reservation. Goshute chairman Leon Bear and others support the facility but some members oppose it.
