Next Stop: Drilling on Inupiat land
FRIDAY, APRIL 19, 2002
Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) is planning on introducing a measure to allow Inupiat Eskimos to drill on land they own in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Stevens said he would put his proposal in the energy bill under debate in the Senate. It would allow development on 92,000 acres of land within ANWR.
The land is held in fee status by Kaktovik Inupiat Corp., a village corporation. The subsurface rights are owned by Arctic Slope Regional Corp., a regional corporation.
