Wis. might appeal Ojibwe decision

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2001

Saying the state of Wisconsin was not happy with last week's decision to uphold the designation of the Sokaogon Ojibwe Community as a state under the Clean Water Act, the attorney general's office is considering an appeal to the Supreme Court.

The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency was correct to treat the tribe as a state. Wisconsin officials, citing questions of jurisidiction, challenged the designation.

The state has until October 5 to decide.
