Bush to release environmental documents

MONDAY, JULY 30, 2001

The Bush administration will allow the Senate Government Affairs Committee to inspect documents addressing environmental policy after Chairman Joseph I. Lieberman (D-Conn.) threatened to supboena several Cabinet agencies for failing to cooperate with his probe.

Lieberman wants access to documents and other information related to environmental decisions made by Bush Cabinet officials. He wants to know if there was any undue influence by the industry on decisions to repeal or scale back a number of strict environmental standards.

The Bush administration is already the target of another Congressional probe. The General Accounting Office is threatening legal action unless Vice President Dick Cheney releases documents on his energy task force.
