Pueblo loses mine challenge
MONDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2001 The New Mexico Supreme Court last Thursday rejected Pojoaque Pueblo's attempt to shut down a mica mine on sacred land. The tribe was against a 20-year, 80-acre expansion of the mine. But the legal challenge was filed too late, state courts have said. Gov. Gerald Nailor said the fight wasn't over, however, and promised to file a suit if mine operators Oglebay Norton violate the conditions of its state permit. Meanwhile, a protest is planned on November 9. Picuris is located in northern New Mexico. Get the Story:
