BIA opposing Haskell highway proposal
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2001 The Bureau of Indian Affairs will file a formal complaint against a proposed highway project if Kansas state officials do not eliminate a portion running through Haskell University, a government lawyers said on Thursday. Robert McCarthy, a Department of Interior field solicitor, said the BIA wants to vacate 31st street from the highway system because of traffic, environmental and safety concerns. He said a formal complaint with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wouldl be taken seriously. The state also believes BIA opposition would be a hindrance. But traffic projections show it may be hard to eliminate the street. Get the Story:
