'Fighting Sioux' still debated
MARCH 26, 2001 It looks like the debate over the "Fighting Sioux" nickname of the University of North Dakota won't end until its removed. Most American Indians at the school and outside hate it, most alumni and non-Indian students love it. What to do? Jodi Rave-Lee of The Lincoln (Nebraska) Journal Star takes a look at the debate and in a companion article, adds the perspective of students at Haskell Indian Nations University, a tribal college whose mascot is "Indians." Students and athletes say outsiders often taunt them because of the name. The Sioux Falls (South Dakota) Argus Leader also writes about the matter in a recent article. P.S. Its North Dakota, not South!! Get the Story:
