Schools condemn Indian mascots

MARCH 22, 2001

Representatives from schools and universities throughout the Midwest on Wednesday condemned the use of American Indians as mascots, logos, nicknames, or team names.

A representative from University of North Dakota helped the develop the policy, which demands the elimination of Indians as mascots. The school has come under fire for its "Fighting Sioux" nickname.

The school's president had been considering revoking it, but the North Dakota Board of Higher Education trumped Charles Kupchella's decision and voted to keep it last December. A wealthy school benefactor had vowed to drop funding of an $85 million hockey arena if the name was scrapped.
