Judge holds Army Corps in contempt on river flows

WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 2003

A federal judge on Tuesday held the Army Corps of Engineers in contempt for refusing to comply with court orders on the Missouri River.

U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler had ordered the Corps to reduce water levels in order to protect endangered birds and fish. But the agency has yet to act, prompting Kessler to impose fines of $500,000 per day unless flows are reduced by 9 a.m. on Friday.

The plaintiffs in the suit are led by the conservation group American Rivers.
