Judge dismisses Conn. recognition lawsuit

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2003

Connecticut officials opposed to the recognition of the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation downplayed a federal judge's dismissal of a lawsuit against the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

State attorney general Richard Blumenthal said the judge's decision could be appealed. Blumenthal and three towns sought information about the way the BIA was handling the Eastern Pequot petition.

Separately, the state is challenging the actual decision to recognize the tribe. The Department of Interior's Board of Indian Appeals is hearing the case.
