Cayuga Nation reacquires former reservation

TUESDAY, APRIL 29, 2003

The Cayuga Nation of New York has reacquired four acres of its former reservation, and plans to acquire 160 more acres, according to news reports.

The tribe currently doesn't have an established reservation but has a $247 million land claim judgment against the state.

The land, in the Finger Lakes, is only 10 miles from 229 acres of land the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma also claims as former reservation. The National Indian Gaming Commission has been asked to consider the status of this land and whether it can be used for gaming purposes.
