Calif. law requires restoration of sacred site
TUESDAY, APRIL 8, 2003
California Governor Gray Davis (D) signed into a law a bill that requires reclamation of a massive gold mine near a site sacred to the Quechan Nation.
The law applies to any metallic mine development within one mile of a sacred site in one part of the state. It affects Glamis Gold Ltd, which plans an open-pit gold mine in Imperial County.
Quechan President Michael Jackson said the tribe supports the bill.
