S.D. county dilutes Indian vote, suit alleges

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit on behalf of three members of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe, alleging voter discrimination in a South Dakota county.

The suit alleges that the white minority in Buffalo County prevents the Native American majority from being elected to the county commission. The way the county's three districts are currently drawn, Native voters are packed into one district and form the majority in another.

The suit is the fifth filed in South Dakota on behalf of Sioux tribal members. Most have been settled and changes have been made to voting systems.
