Seminole Tribe holds hearing on Jim Billie
THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 2003
The Seminole Tribe of Florida will hold a hearing today to consider ousting chief Jim Billie for good.
The flamboyant leader has been suspended for more than a year until formal charges were brought against him. He is accused of mismanaging tribal finances and violating the tribe's constitution.
Billie was at the center of a federal probe into the tribe's businesses that resulted in the indictment of three former associates. The trio were acquitted of wrongdoing in federal court. Billie testified in that trial and acknowledged he made risky business deals.
The tribal council contends Billie lost millions in funds.
