DWI statistics on Navajo Nation called alarming

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2003

More than 5,000 people were arrested for drunk driving on the Navajo Nation in 2002, The Farmington Daily Times reports.

Police on the reservation received nearly 27,000 calls for public intoxication, according to a police official. Of those, 13,000 were arrested.

Statistics like these led Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr., who lost a daughter to a drunk driving accident, and Navajo community members to start the first Mothers Against Drunk Driving chapter on the reservation.
