'The buffalo are coming back'
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2002 Tribes all over the country are trying to restore the once great buffalo herd. According to The Chicago Tribune, 52 tribes in 18 states are raising more than 12,000 buffalo. The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe of South Dakota owns the largest herd at 2,400. "The buffalo are coming back, and with them our strength as a people," a tribal elder said. The total number of buffalo in the United States and Canada is put at 350,000. Just a few hundred existed at the turn of the century. Get the Story:
