S.D. woman 'traced' signatures on forms

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2002

The South Dakota woman at the center of a voter fraud investigation burned absentee ballot applications and traced signatures on ballot forms, investigators said.

Becky Red Earth-Villeda has denied any wrongdoing in the case. But attorney general Mark Barnett said he has turned up 15 absentee ballot applications with signatures that appear to be forged. He said there are additional ones that are being questioned.

Barnett has not turned up fraudulent absentee ballots, just applications. But counties are being advised to set aside any suspicious ballots that may have to be checked in a close race.
