Maine casino petition challenged

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2002

A judge in Maine refused to stop two tribes from gathering signatures for a casino referendum.

The Passamaquoddy Tribe and the Penobscot Nation drafted a statewide question to gauge support of a proposed $650 million casino. Anti-casino opponents contend the wording is unfair.

The question is: "Do you want to allow a casino to be run by the Passamaquoddy Tribe and Penobscot Nation if part of the revenue is used for state education and municipal revenue sharing?"

A hearing has been scheduled to consider the anti-casino claims.
