Senior BLM land appraiser removed

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2002

The Bureau of Land Management's chief appraiser has been relieved of his duties in the wake of a scandal over how land swaps in the West have been handled.

David Cavanaugh was the target of criticism in a report by a Congressionally-supported standards group. The Appraisal Foundation said the BLM orchestrated questionable land deals and potentially violated the law.

The report called for the BLM to be stripped of its appraisal duties and handed to an independent entity.
