Native regulation of hunting at issue

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2002

A proposal to increase Alaska Native authority over hunting isn't included in a bill before a House committee.

According to The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, the Bush administration said it was working on a proposal to give tribal management of seal, walrus and whale hunting the force of federal law. But the proposal never came through, the paper reports.

Currently, management of hunts is split between two federal agencies. Agreements with Alaska Natives are allowed but tribal leaders want great control.
