Lumbee woman goes to Miss America
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2002 A member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina arrived at the Miss America pageant over the weekend amid questions over her status in the competition. After losing the crown due a controversy over some old photos, Rebekah Revels won a court decision to reinstate her state beauty title. She believes she is North Carolina's true representative. But Misty Clymer is also at the pageant. She was given the state title after Revels was kicked out. A federal court is considering which contestant will participate. Revels is not the only Native American at the pageant. Miss South Dakota is Vanessa Shortbull, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. The pageant will be held September 21. Get the Story:
