State in talks over mine near reservation

The state of Wisconsin is in the process of determining the value of land and mineral rights for a proposed mine near the Mole Lake Reservation.

The appraisal figures are kept secret until final negotiations with Nicolet Minerals are complete. The company wants to build a 55 million-ton zinc-copper mine.

The Sokaogon Ojibwe Tribe fears the mine will hurt its water system. Other tribes and local officials oppose the project.
