Famous grizzly bear killed in Alaska

FRIDAY, AUGUST 9, 2002

Biologists in Alaska shot and killed Grizzly 001 on Wednesday because they said the 15-year-old bear was posing a threat to humans.

Ironically, humans helped turn the bear into a "problem." Grizzly 001 was raised on garbage and human food at the Prudhoe Bay oil field. She was photographed walking on top of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline and showed no fear of humans.

There are an more than 30 "problem" bears in the area. Officials have concluded they cannot stop the animals from changing their garbage ways.
