Senate panel considers Pueblo land bill

WEDNESDAY, JULY 31, 2002

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee today will mark up a bill to settle the land claims of Sandia Pueblo in New Mexico.

The Pueblo is giving up its claim to 10,000 acres in the Sandia Mountains in exchange for various protections, including veto authority over future development, continued hunting rights and access for ceremonial purposes. The land was wrongly excluded from the tribe's reservation, a Clinton-era legal opinion found.
