Pope heads to Mexico to canonize saint
MONDAY, JULY 29, 2002 Pope John Paul II heads to Mexico City, Mexico, this week to canonize the first Indian saint. Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, an Aztec man whose name means "the eagle that speaks," is revered in Mexican culture and a symbol to many of their devotion to the Catholic religion. Some scholars, however, question whether the Virgin Mary appeared to him in 1531 as history is told. The canonization takes place July 31. Get the Story:
