Ariz. fire burning reservation

FRIDAY, JUNE 28, 2002

The massive Rodeo-Chediski fire continues to burn on the Fort Apache Reservation in Arizona.

Part of the fire began on the reservation a week ago. It has grown to more than 400,000 acres.

More than 1,000 residents of the reservation were evacuated. Some off-reservation residents are returning to their homes.

A White Mountain Apache elder held a ceremony yesterday to ask for rain. The fire has wrecked the tribe's timber business and local economy.
