Goshute waste site feared permanent
TUESDAY, JUNE 25, 2002
Environmentalists fear a proposed nuclear waste site on a Utah reservation could become a more permanent solution.
The Skull Valley Goshute Tribe and a consortium of private utilities want to store up to 40,000 tons of waste on the reservation. They applied for a 20-year license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Once Yucca Mountain, the federal site in Nevada, fills up -- which Department of Energy officials acknowledge will happen -- the Goshute site could be extended.
