Racism cited in tribal opposition
THURSDAY, JUNE 20, 2002
Racism and fear are being cited as reasons why resident of Maine oppose a tribal casino.
State Rep. Donald Soctomah, who represents the Passamaquoddy Tribe in the Legislature, accused anti-casino groups of using scare tactics. Opponents deny using race as a factor.
The Passamaquoddy Tribe and Penobscot Nation raised the casino idea this past spring and are planning to pursue it next year. Several communities have voted against a casino.
