Logging workers protest company
THURSDAY, JUNE 6, 2002 Loggers in British Columbia have joined with a First Nation to prevent their company from destroying forest lands on Queen Charlotte Islands. The Weyerhaeuser workers threatened a one-day walkout to show their support for the Haida Gwaai First Nation. The company instead gave the employees the day off on Monday after Haida chief Guujaaw suggested a traditional salmon feast be held. The Haida Gwaai/Queen Charlotte Island Forest Workers wants to develop a long-range logging plan to prevent destruction of the forest. The First Nation is seeking more control over assets on the island per a court decision which requires the band to be consulted. Guujaaw filed a lawsuit for off-shore mineral resources.
