Guilty conviction for tribal theft

A federal judge on Tuesday found an Alaska Native elder guilty of one count of stealing tribal funds.

U.S. District Judge James Fitzgerald rejected assertions that Andrew Gusty Sr., 64, didn't know what he was doing when he signed over $24,000 of his village's funds. Gusty, former president of the Stony River tribal council, is reported to be illiterate.

Gusty's wife pleaded guilty for the same crime.
