Supreme Court rejects water challenge

WEDNESDAY, MAY 29, 2002

The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to review the state of Nevada's attempt to draw water away from a lake on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation.

Without comment, the Court let stand an appeals court decision which ruled the state improperly approved a water rights transfer. The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe and the federal government oppose the diversion of 280 acre-feet of water away from Pyramid Lake.

Yesterday's action doesn't mean the tribe's objections will halt the transfer. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals returned the case to a federal judge for consideration of the evidence.
