Neb. group lends helping hand

WEDNESDAY, MAY 22, 2002

A grassroots group based on the Winnebago Reservation in Nebraska held a ceremony on Tuesday to start work on a healing garden.

AiKiRuti, which means helping hand in the Ho-Chunk language, will plant traditional herbs and plants in the garden. The group has received a three-year $100,000 grant from Nebraska Health Care/Tobacco Settlement Fund and other funding sources.

Plans also call for a 3,600-square-foot learning and visiting center to serve as a place where tribal members and others can learn more about traditional Ho-Chunk culture. The estimated cost for the entire project is $700,000.
