BIA drops privatization push
TUESDAY, MAY 21, 2002 The Bureau of Indian Affairs has dropped plans to privatize the worst-performing Indian schools. Congressional appropriators refused to allow any money in the BIA's fiscal year 2003 budget to be used for a pilot project. Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb wanted to spend nearly $12 million to help identify and move the proposal forward. Get the Story:
