Addressing public health with veterinary care in rural areas
An initiative started this month to bring veterinary care to rural Alaska villages also has roots in public health by reducing the risk for pets and feral animals to attack or pass on zoonotic diseases, like rabies, to humans.

Alaska Native Rural Veterinary Inc. and the Alaska Federation of Natives is doing what a stagnant federal bill, introduced by U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) in 2025, aims to do by tasking the Indian Health Service to support veterinary services in rural Native communities. [S.620, the Veterinary Services to Improve Public Health in Rural Communities Act]
