Senate Indian Affairs Committee to hold hearing on Carcieri fix

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold a hearing this Wednesday on five bills.

S.2188, a bill to fix the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Carcieri v. Salazar, is on the agenda. The bill ensures that the Bureau of Indian Affairs can place land in trust for all tribes, regardless of the date of their federal recognition.

A related bill is on the agenda. S.1603, the Gun Lake Trust Land Reaffirmation Act, clarifies that land already placed in trust for the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatami Indians in Michigan can't be challenged under Carcieri.

The committee will take testimony on three other bills: S.1818, the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe - Fish Springs Ranch Settlement Act; S.2040, the Blackfoot River Land Exchange Act; and S.2041, a bill related to S.2040.

The hearing takes place at 2:30pm in Room 628 of the Senate Dirksen Office Building. A witness list hasn't been posted online.
