Judge holds hearing on reservation trailer park
A federal judge held a hearing on the status of a troubled trailer park on the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Reservation in California.

Federal prosecutors said conditions at the Desert Mobile Home Park, also known as Duroville, remain dangerous. They say owner Harvey Duro, a tribal council member, has failed to make improvements as promised.

Duro is still working on a $3 million loan to upgrade the facility, his attorney said. The attorney said the government has objected to maintenance and repair work even before it has started.

After the hearing, Judge Stephen G. Larsen ordered Duro to stop renting to new people. Upwards of 6,000 residents, mainly Indian and Hispanic migrants from Mexico and Central America, live in Duroville.

Larsen also ordered several businesses at Duroville to appear in court and explain why they should keep operating. Two businesses were exempt from the order.
