A South Dakota county has agreed to submit its proposed redistricting plan to the Department of Justice
as part of an Indian voting rights settlement.
Charles Mix County will seek federal approval to increase the number of districts on the county commission from three to five. According to the county, the two new districts give members of the Yankton Sioux Tribe a bigger voice.
But the American Civil Liberties Union doesn't think the plan will be approved by DOJ. The ACLU says the county will have to address Indian voting rights with a three-district system.
The settlement was approved by a federal judge on Tuesday.
