A reported 200 people attended the memorial for James Lott Sr., the late chief of the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians of Oregon.
Lott, 52, was elected to the position of chief in 2000. He was recalled as a "good warrior" who was always willing to help out his people. He played Santa Claus as the tribe's annual Christmas pageant and was an advocate for Indian youth.
Lott served in the Army. He died of a heart complications on March 19.
