‘Don’t mess with Indian Country’: Native advocates endorse Jon Tester in Montana

A group of Native advocates supporting Kamala Harris for president is endorsing Sen. Jon Tester (D-Montana) as he seeks another term in the U.S. Senate.

In a social media post on September 5, 2024, the Natives For Harris group called attention to Tim Sheehy, the Republican candidate in Montana. Sheehy has come under fire for repeatedly connecting Native people to alcohol.

"As Tim Sheehy continues to disrespect our community with harmful rhetoric, we need leaders who stand with us," the @natives4harris post reads.

Tester, who is seeking a fourth term in office, has served on the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs since winning his first election with the help of the Native vote in 2006. Natives For Harris cited Tester's favorable record in endorsing his candidacy.

"Jon Tester, Sheehy’s opponent, has consistently fought for Tribal sovereignty, health care, education, and safety in Indian Country," the group states. "From passing Savanna’s Act to securing record infrastructure investments, Tester has always empowered Native voices. Let’s show our strength and keep him in the Senate."

And in an social media story highlighting the endorsement, the Natives For Harris account directed a message to @sheehyformt: "Don't mess with Indian Country."
