Leader of ‘American Indians for McCain’ endorses Kamala Harris

A citizen of the Cherokee Nation who has described herself as a "life-long Republican" is among hundreds of GOP faithful who are endorsing Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris over their party's choice.

Jana McKeag is the former chair of "American Indians for McCain," a group that supported the late U.S. Senator John McCain when he ran for president. She has served in the federal government under three Republican presidents and six Republican cabinet secretaries, including as one of the first appointees of the National Indian Gaming Commission.

But McKeag is now supporting Harris over Republican nominee Donald Trump. She is one of the signatories on a letter that slammed the one-term former U.S. president.

At home, another four years of Donald Trump’s chaotic leadership, this time focused on advancing the dangerous goals of Project 2025, will hurt real, everyday people and weaken our sacred institutions," the letter circulated by the Harris campaign states.

"Abroad, democratic movements will be irreparably jeopardized as Trump and his acolyte JD Vance kowtow to dictators like Vladimir Putin while turning their backs on our allies," the Republicans who previously supported McCain, George W. Bush and Mitt Romney for president continued.

"We can’t let that happen," they asserted.

In February 2020, McKeag publicly endorsed Pete Buttigieg, who was then seeking the Democratic nomination for president. She later backed Joe Biden after he became the party's nominee and Harris became the vice presidential nominee.
