In an election day broadcast, CNN lumped American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians (and who knows who else) into a “Something Else” category of voters.
Rebecca Nagle (Cherokee) and Joey Clift (Cowlitz) were among the first to post about it. Now, Native people are rejecting the misclassification and reclaiming the term on social media.

It’s literally Native American Heritage Month, and @CNN referred to us as “something else” in their data breakdown. It’s the deliberate erasure, data terrorism and paper genocide, for me.

If you want to know what one of the end points of genocide looks like, listing Native American people as “something else” on a list of races is a pretty good example! pic.twitter.com/5k7pSyE4Xg

Last night @CNN called Native voters “something else”.
In an election largely driven by race, the media still fails to accurately cover voters of color.
