Federal authorities announced charges against 19 people in connection with a bank fraud scheme at the casino owned by the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi.
According to the August 25 indictment, which was originally filed under seal, the defendants deposited fraudulent checks into accounts at the Bank of America. "Law enforcement refers to this type of bank fraud scheme as 'Cracking Cards,'" the office said in a press release. According to the press release, tribal police helped the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service investigate the scheme.
