Friday, February 20, 2004

The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals has sent the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Chippewa Indians Detroit casino case back to a federal judge.

The tribe has won two circuit court rulings affirming its constitutional rights. The city of Detroit wrongfully denied the the tribe a chance to bid for three casinos.

The tribe has reached a settlement with two of the three casino companies and may seek to reopen the bidding for the third. The tribe will receive $79 million under the settlement, which will now go before U.S. District Judge Robert Holmes Bell, who has handled the case since 1997.
