Hopi Tribe takes gaming issue to villages

Monday, March 8, 2004

The Hopi Tribe of Arizona is continuing a series of meetings aimed at informing tribal members of an upcoming vote on gaming.

This month's meetings will take place at Hopi villages on the reservation. Tribal members who live off-reservation in cities like Albuquerque, N.M., and Flagstaff, Ariz., got a chance to listen to the gaming presentation last month.

On May 19, tribal members will be asked to vote on four options. The tribe could open a casino on trust land in Arizona, lease slot machine rights to other tribes, open a casino and lease slot rights or stay out of gaming entirely.

In a previous referendum, tribal members rejected gaming.
