Navajo Nation to hold referendum on gaming

Wednesday, April 28, 2004

Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. believes tribal members will eventually approve gaming for the entire reservation.

Voters will get a chance to prove Shirley right, or wrong, this fall. The Navajo Nation council schedule a referendum August 3 on gaming.

Two prior referendums have failed. But Shirley pointed out that the margin between those who support gambling and those against it is closing in.

The tribe has approved gaming for a community near Albuquerque, New Mexico, that is detached from the main reservation.
