The Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation of Arizona says gaming marked a turnaround in its history.
In May 1992, the tribe defied state and federal authorities who tried to shut down the casino on the reservation. The 24-day standoff led to the first tribal-state gaming compacts. The tribe celebrated the 12th anniversary of Sovereignty Day on Friday by highlighting the benefits of gaming.
