Wisconsin tribe to withhold $30M gaming payment

Thursday, May 20, 2004

The Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin plans to withhold a $30 million payment to the state in light of the recent court decision striking down new tribal-state compacts.

The tribe's attorney said the compact remains valid except for the revenue-sharing provision. The state Supreme Court said Gov. Jim Doyle (D) did not have the authority to authorize new casino games.

In total, the state stand to lose up to $207 million in payments from 10 tribes.
