Meskwaki Tribe's gaming compact to expire

Tuesday, August 17, 2004

The Meskwaki Tribe's gaming compact with the state of Iowa expires on Wednesday.

Tribal leaders have been negotiating for a new agreement since January. But discussions have been going slow and nothing substantial has emerged.

The sticking point appears to be revenue-sharing, with some lawmakers wanting the tribe to contribute more. But the tribe says the casino's 2,100 jobs and $59 million impact are enough.

The tribe says lack of a new compact may jeopardize its expansion plan.
