Group to fight off-reservation New Mexico casino

Friday, September 10, 2004

A group opposed to an off-reservation casino in New Mexico includes representatives of the horse industry that competes with Indian gaming.

At least four members of the Committee to Protect Doņa Ana County represent racetracks. The president of the New Mexico State University Board of Regents, which has been promised money from a racetrack owner, is also part of the group.

Jemez Pueblo has teamed up with an art dealer to acquire land in southern New Mexico for a casino. The proposed casino would compete with racetracks and casinos owned by the Mescalero Apache Nation of New Mexico and the Tigua Tribe of Texas.
